This month, Dena & Amelia channeled their inner Auroras in a special Rose Adagio themed private class. We always love seeing these two beauties dance together!
Q: What does ballet mean to each of you, and how has sharing the experience together as friends shaped your journey?
Amelia: Ballet has always been a childhood dream for me, but academics took priority and I stopped classes for many years. It was Dena giving me little ballet lessons during school recess that showed me how much I wanted ballet in my life and gave me the push to return to class!
Today, ballet is my favourite way to stay active — it’s such a wonderful mix of cardio, strength, and flexibility, and I truly believe it’s the perfect way to age gracefully.
What makes it even more special is sharing this journey with Dena. From Ballet Fitness to the occasional variation workshop, it’s something that has kept us moving, laughing, and close in our friendship through the years!
Dena: I did ballet for a long time when I was young, so to me, ballet meant discipline, consistency, and showing up, week after week, and year after year, to hone a skill that I had chosen. It meant elegance and precision; it meant learning something new about my body every single lesson – the muscle awareness it taught me is unparalleled. I have tried so many other sports and dance genres by now, and the skill has remained useful and applicable. Ballet cultivated in me the confidence to move – to walk in front of an audience, to run, to jump, to duck and weave, and to climb, all without fear that I would fumble.
Resuming the ballet journey with Amelia in adulthood injected a new element of fun and camaraderie into it. I enjoyed introducing a routine to our friendship, where we met up regularly and shared the same experience and space. With the variation workshop, we also had a little ‘project’ to work on together and we learnt new things about each other too.
Balletbody has given us a new space and direction for our friendship to bloom and it has been such a lovely experience.
