This month’s team feature is a very special one, as we are celebrating the four year anniversary at BalletBody of three of our dear instructors: Cheryl, Jeanine and Yuwen. We’re so honoured to have witnessed them develop and grow as instructors, and to have them share their knowledge and passion for dance with you all.
Q: What inspired you to become a BalletBody instructor, and how has that passion evolved over the years?
Jeanine: Being able to share the love of dance and art of ballet with people, and to see them learn and enjoy it. That continues to inspire me today.
Q: If you were to describe your teaching style using a ballet step, what would it be and why?
Yuwen: A battement glissé I guess. I’m always trying to emphasise so much on the control this simple move has and instil many imageries to help clients understand how to execute the move properly – which is kind of like how I teach in class!
Q: Can you share a memorable moment from your teaching career that has deeply impacted you?
Cheryl: For me, its probably my first compliment or feedback from a client when I first started teaching at BalletBody. She told me that she really enjoyed herself and felt graceful, and that was her first dance class / ballet fitness class. I remember she gave me a really warm smile and told me that she didn’t feel stressed or intimidated in my class, but thoroughly enjoyed the entire hour. It was from then on that besides sharing my passion with clients, I want to create a fun yet conducive environment for them to feel safe, and also be able to learn while enjoying themselves without feeling they are being “judged”.
