Dancer performing waltz of the flowers on stage

In The Wings: The Nutcracker – Waltz Of The Flowers

In The Wings
22nd December 2022

For our final Variation Workshop of the year, we got into the Christmas spirit BalletBody style with an all time favourite – The Nutcracker!

The story of The Nutcracker is loosely based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s fantasy story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, where a girl befriends a nutcracker that comes to life on Christmas Eve and wages a battle against the evil Mouse King.

*Fun fact* Hoffmann’s story is actually much darker and more troubling than the version that reached the stage in 1892, original choreographer Marius Petipa chose to follow a lighter adaptation of the story written by Alexandre Dumas père.

Over the years The Nutcracker has evolved on stage but its fantastical characters, breath-taking costumes, spectacular sets and incredible dancing remain!

Together with co-founder Alison Carroll, the BalletBody dancers brought the exquisite Waltz of the Flowers to life, transforming our studios to the Land of the Sweets – a magical kingdom ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy and visited by Clara on Christmas Eve.

Dressed in florals or the colour of their favourite flowers, they mastered the art of moving as one to Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score. Elegant port de bras and intricate patterns were used to portray the flower petals in this famous Act II divertissement.

Well done to everyone who joined us for our workshops and classes, not just this one, but throughout the year! We are so proud of how far you’ve come!
